Consistency, Consistency, Consistency

How well you understand that the gun must be to the right or left of the target has little to do with your ability to consistently do it. The number of times you have done it has everything to do with how consistently and successful you will be when actually at the range or in the field.

You get out of it what you put into it, and the more you put into it, the better and more consistent you will become, and your ability to correct your misses in the field will follow. We continue to be amazed at how quickly shooters improve after doing the homework in our online courses. It really makes our job so much easier and so much less frustrating for the shooters who come to us to learn to be more consistent.

So, what is the conundrum? You can think your way through a shot where aiming is required because you and the target are still. But when it comes to hitting a moving target with a shotgun, you cannot think your way through the shot. You must create enough long-term memory through deliberate practice that the brain knows how you want the shot to come together without thinking about it.

I’ll close with a quote from Reno radio personality and OSP member Rick Carter: “If you’re thinking, you’re stinking!”
